In the past, morel scientists have barely noticed the variations in appearances of morels. The only reference to the differences was to suggest that environmental effects must be the cause. Below are photographs of clusters of morels which have identical appearances. These clusters show that morels which grow from the same mycelium have the same appearance. When the spore strain is the same, the appearance is the same. It is not environmental effects which control the appearance of morels but intrinsic properties of the mycelium.
