Another Angle

Here's another angle on the objectivity of morality.

Satan has power rivaling God's. He uses it to create natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes and floods; and he creates accidents such as plane crashes.

So the difference between God and satan is not power—power is relative. In other words, if God had a little less power, would that make him satan? If not, what makes satan satan? The thing that makes satan satan is a defiance of the objective laws of life.

The thing that makes God God is respect for the laws of life. Life is made up of laws, which are objective realities. Morality is that which sustains life, which is adherence to the objective laws which life is made up of.

If God were arbitrarily synthesizing morality, he would be no different than satan. If it is possible to synthesize morality, there would be no such thing as sin. Sin is an attempt to change moral laws.

So there are moral laws which exist independent of subjective influences. Molecules teach that lesson. Plants need water; humans need food. Those are biological laws required to sustain life.

Spiritual life also has requirements. People need rights and freedom, which is the same thing as not being sinned against. To not be assaulted, murdered or robbed is a right to live and make one's own decisions.

Those requirements are objectively determined, which means God did not create them, and he cannot change them.

Conservatives absolutize God's power, saying or implying that if he created life, he also created the morality which goes with it. Not so. Once life exists (or anything else), it acquires relationships to everything else which cannot be defied in the act of creation.

For example, an auto manufacturer could not make an auto which defies material laws or other laws. Why not make an auto which does not have to stop at stop signs, or one which uses square tires?

So it is respect for the objectivity of morality that makes God something more than corrupted persons such as satan. Infact, God would not be able to create life, just as satan cannot create life, if he did not respect the objective laws of life. Creating life requires alignment upon the objective requirements of life.
