Second Atonement Analogy
Once there were some workers cleaning a horse barn, and they decided to throw some horse manure on the owner's roses to fertilize them. The owner said, "Well done," and gave them extra pay. So they threw horse manure on the owner's roses whenever they got a chance. Eventually, the owner said he didn't want any more horse manure on his roses, they had too much already, and he now uses Miracle Grow. But the workers kept throwing horse manure on his roses anyway, because they assumed it made them worth more.
Then the automobile was invented. As autos started to break down, they were taken to repair shops. The mechanics said they didn't need fixing; instead you just throw horse manure on the roses, but Lee Iacoca threw horse manure on the roses once for all time. The drivers insisted the autos needed fixing. "No," the mechanics said, "Lee Iacoca threw horse manure on the roses once and for all, and he knows more about it than you do."
What atonement means. Atonement began before Abraham's time. It consisted of offering burnt animal carcasses to God while food was being cooked on an open fire. Paul then applied it to Christ's crucifixion saying it took care of the problem of sin. Because someone (It's unclear who.) supposedly overcame God's anger through atonement (by crucifying Christ), everything "born again" persons do is supposed to be the work of the Holy Spirit. The implication is that there isn't any other sin but God's anger. back to Fundamentalism |
