What Christ Taught Christ taught the human responsibilities for sin and how to overcome sin. Organized religion is not being used for that purpose. Satan teaches people how to live, while religion supposedly fixes the problem through mysterious magic. Nihilism is an example. On the streets, people learn that knowledge and logic are bad. Christ taught the opposite. There is an overall theme to Christ's teaching. It is the objectivity of morality. Objectivity was taught as responsibilities which are humanly determinable. One finds the requirements in the laws of life and the universe. Parables were used constantly to relate morality to laws of life. There are two large areas where morality resides. One is personalized morality, and the other is socialized morality. Personalized morality is summarized by the Ten Commandments. It is personalized in that there are a small number of victims. The primary significance is between the individuals and God. Socialized morality has a broad significance and is everyone's business. It would generally fit under the label of oppression, since it can only fall upon vulnerable persons, though the victims are often the general public, as well as social classes and groups. Christ primarily taught socialized morality. He said that the Ten Commandments still apply, but the only time he mentioned them was when asked, and then he added social morality to the requirements (Luke 10:30-36). In Christ's description of judgment day, the Ten Commandments were not mentioned. The sheep would be separated from the goats on the basis of who fed the hungry, clothed the naked, etc.(Mat 25:31-46), which is the primary representation of socialized morality. Changing the world, however, was not his purpose. He said it would not change. The purpose was to change the individual. It was a method of correcting human relationships by reversing the forces which sin creates. A large part of the significance is in how people communicate with each other. It is in words that human relationships are generally expressed. But teaching at that level would be too superficial. To get at the root of the problem, one must learn to feed the hungry, because no one is any more constructive with words than they are with other human needs. The reason why Christ focused on socialized morality rather than personalized morality is because human interactions cannot be corrected by focusing on oneself. With socialized morality, one makes positive commitments to proper behavior, which reverses the corruptive forces created by sin. It is common for superficial Christians to reduce Christianity down to a relationship to Christ. Christ taught much more than that. He taught how to contribute to one's own salvation and the betterment of others and how to be worth something.
A lot of persons don't just want to be hauled away in a truck; they want to be worth something. Christ taught how that is done. Addendum. In this context, something should be said about the tiresome conflict over faith vs. works. Paul said people are saved by faith, not works. Christ taught the opposite as human responsibilities. Paul had no authority to contradict Christ. Secondly, Paul's logic was not valid. He said in effect that people cannot save themselves, only God can save; and therefore, only faith saves. If there were no human responsibilities involved, there would have been no reason for Christ to teach. Paul's error was to absolutize. He used God's essential involvement and absolutized it by excluding human involvement. It demonstrates how absolutizing is used as a mindless method of corrupting standards.
Another mindless example needs to be mentioned. Conservatives say there are moral absolutes. They don't have a clue as to what an absolute is. It is about impossible to define an absolute. There are always infinite complexities that get contradicted in attempts to create any absolute. What conservatives are really saying, as evidenced in the result, is that no one can validly question their messed up opinions on the subject. |
