What's Wrong with Fundamentalism and Conservativism I'm sure the first thing you are concerned about is that I spell conservativism wrong. No Virginia; satan spells conservativism wrong. You have to realize that satan corrupts the dictionary like everything else. Why let him get by with it. Shortening a word before adding the suffix ism is improper. Relativism is not spelled relatism. It's similar to the word comprehendible. Changing the d to an s is improper. The basic thing wrong with conservativism in all of its forms is that the underlying purpose (somewhat subconscious) is to promote elitism, bigotry, selfishness, exploitation, etc. Nothing else about it is stable. The dictionary defines conservative as opposing change. But conservatives only oppose change when they are controlling power. Otherwise, they cannot produce change radically enough. When conservatives acquired political power in 1980 they had to leave no vestiges of liberalism remaining, even if it meant dismantling the government and reconstructing it, which they tried to do. They almost created a Constitutional convention. Getting to fundamentalism specifically, the hallmark and dictionary definition of fundamentalism is over-literalness in interpreting the Bible. But only the first few chapters of Genesis and Paul become relevant to the test, because everything else is too much truth for them. Fundamentalists don't get literal about selling their possessions and giving to the poor (Luke 18:22), giving their shirt when someone asks for their coat (Mat 5:40), not to lay up earthly treasures (6:19), or anything else that Christ taught. They are only literal about the allegories and trivial corruptions such as Paul's version of religion. The allegories of Genesis describe how God created material life. Since it's about God, there are no human responsibilities involved. Therefore, the only significance of misinterpreting those subjects is to create a litmus test for worthiness. But in the science realm, creationism creates a conflict with evolution and destroys the ability of kids to understand science. Christ said "A farmer went out sowing..." (Mat 13:4-23). To explain it, he said it applied to spreading God's word. So he used an allegory and explained it as such. Fundamentalists are contradicting Christ when they claim allegories have to be interpreted literally. |
