Creationism Conflicts with Science

Intelligent design is not in conflict with evolution, and it does not negate natural selection.

I'm an evolution biologist and Christian moral philosopher. I find that God Created Biology through Evolution. But the God part is religion, not science; and the evolution part is science, not religion.

There are oceans of evidence in science which creationists do not account for while they claim to be proving scientists wrong. It is not science to ignore and contradict evidence. I'll describe some of the larger points here.

Creationists claim all of life was crammed into six thousand years. What about several dozen ice ages? They say there was only one, and it occurred during the past six thousand years. The shortest ice ages take about a hundred thousand years; but creationists claim they have expert geologists who say otherwise. Having a supposed expert is not science; accounting for all evidence is science.

Precambrian animals were limited to soft tissued ocean creatures, as bones had not evolved yet. Their fossils are found in shale in the Canadian Rockies at something like ten thousand feet of elevation. How did that happen? Creationists say those creatures were bottom dwellers which were covered by sediments, while the bony fish were not affected. The sediments supposedly were converted to shale in the mountains in six thousand years.

Here are a few points about dinosaurs which should be easy to grasp. The plants and animals of one era are not compatible with the plants and animals of another era. Dinosaurs ate nonwoody plants. Since then, the nonwoody plants became extinct except for relatives like weeds, palm trees and a few related types. Dinosaurs could not eat modern trees, because they would get a mouth full of wood, and the resins and toxins would kill them.

Grass could not exist significantly when there were dinosaurs, because dinosaurs needed bare ground to lay their eggs. The reason why reptiles (Dinosaurs were reptiles.) are now long like snakes instead of four legged like dinosaurs is because grass forced them to go underground to lay their eggs.

The era of dinosaurs did not have modern plants or animals. How did the primitive plants and animals change into the modern ones, if there are no major transitions, and all change is within species?

Creationists assume that all plants and animals existed together when God created them, but a few became extinct since. All biological types could not possibly exist together. Modern animals include numerous predators, such as wolves, coyotes, lions and bears which would destroy baby dinosaurs. There were no such predators during the dinosaur age beyond the dinosaurs themselves. Some of them evolved into predators late in their evolution, which might have contributed significantly to their extinction. But even those were not as sophisticated as modern predators.

Another absurdity of creationism is in the rate of biological change. The known changes would have taken more than a few thousand years to occur. For example, horses show a lot of change in bone structure, particularly in regard to hooves; and hundreds of variations are found. That amount of change does not occur in a few thousand years.

If creationists waffle and say God created some primitive horses and advanced horses at the same time, they then have different types occupying the same niche.

There are millions of such points in biology which the creationists know nothing about. Yet they pretend to have knowledge superior to scientists, and they use religious authority to feed their falsehoods into the minds of persons who cannot evaluate the errors properly such as children.

More than ninety nine percent of evolution is not in the geology and paleontology, which creationists use for their rationalizations, but in the biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and genetics, which creationists know nothing about.

My own mushroom research shows a major transition, as a yeast evolved into a mushroom very recently and shows a reversion back to a primitive form under laboratory conditions. Creationists say it demonstrates "microevolution," even though it occurred at the level of taxonomic orders, about five levels about species.

Two billion years of biological evolution didn't just leave a mark on biology; it is biology. Biology is studied as a set of relationships which change through time.

If God did all of that in a flash, he created so many indications of evolution that he wants people to think evolution exists; so why defy him.

The creationist attack upon evolution puts Christianity in conflict with science. Christianity loses awful fast in that battle. Kids don't deserve to go to school with creationism in their heads causing them to assume their science teachers are lying to them about evolution.

Creationism is based upon an overly literal interpretation of a trivial point in the Bible which says God created life in six days. The Biblical purpose was to create a six day calendar, not to teach science. Elsewhere, the Biblical authors imply that the world is flat, because the science is to be left to later times.

One of the reasons why creationism is promoted in religion is because ultra-conservatives are opposed to a philosophy of change. If realities change, then there is a responsibility for humans to account for change. Doing so requires constructivity, reason, knowledge, morality, justice, etc. Instead, conservatives contrive a static state, where human responsibilities can be ignored.

Creationism has no relevance to religion. However God created biology should only be relevant to science, not religion. That's why there is no significant description of biology in the Bible beyond a statement of God creating it.

The best fossil evidence for evolution is with plants. Here's a reference for that:
