The basic principles need to be understood and accepted before complexities can be understood. I'm reluctant to get into complexities of religion, because there is so little understanding and acceptance of the basics. But I think this subject needs to be described anyway.

Evil is controlled from the spirit world. The evil spirit with the most power is called satan. Evil spirits have powers rivaling God's. This means pervasive perception which includes looking forward and backward in time with some ability to control what is perceived.

They get their power from spirit cannibalism as described on the spirit world page. Spirit cannibalism is stealing spirit substance from the minds of other persons. The stolen substance combines with the eaters spirit substance to create heterogeneous spirit substance, which is the basis of all higher spiritual states. The more the spirit cannibals steal the more power they acquire. So the one on top controls the process and makes sure he always has more power than anyone else.

Genesis describes spirit cannibalism very explicitly in the story of Adam and Eve. The devil says that if Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, their eyes will be opened, and they will become like gods. When they ate the forbidden fruit, sure enough, their eyes were opened. God never disputed that fact, he simply said they would surely die because of it. They would die spiritually and morally.

The problem began something like ten billion years ago. Spirit world time does not directly relate to material time, but there is a relationship which is significant over vast amounts of time. Both parallel each other. Idiots who go to the other side and come back often claim there is no time in the spirit world, but they are mesmerized by their immediate experience and have no ability to properly evaluate it. Time is relative change, and it occurs in the spirit world as well as the material world.

After sin is removed from the universe, it returns due to the inconspicuous nature of psychological conditioning and the inevitable forgetting what was learned in the human society. So the spirit world is continuously cycling between sin redeveloping and sin being overcome in a material society.

Sin begins as the desire to dominate. It becomes psychologically conditioned by the positive reinforcements of power. A spirit substance flows with power resulting in a very strong positive reinforcement. It flows into persons when succeeding, and out of them when failing. So corrupters cause it to flow out of other persons and into themselves by dominating and degrading other persons.

Eventually, stealing power substance is not enough, and corrupters turn to directly stealing spirit substance. At that point they make a huge leap from simply reinforcing their corruptions to acquiring a major source of power. When spirit cannibalism begins in the spirit world, everything is turned upside down instantly. The destroyers become the new gods of the universe. Nothing can touch them. Whether there is still a God with more power than they have is not clear, and it is hardly relevant, because spirit cannibals cannot be controlled. There is no material parallel that could compare to it. If the most evil persons known in the human society acquired control over all nuclear and military weapons, it would be paradise compared to what spirit cannibals do with their power in the spirit world. Material reality was created for this reason. It had to be so substantial that it could stabilize realities and provide some protection from spirit cannibals until sin could be overcome again.

You need to notice at this point that overcoming sin is a major project that requires several billion years of material life, because there are a lot of frauds claiming otherwise. Some of them claim sin was taken care of on the cross by murdering Christ. Some claim that Paul was purified by being hit by lightning. Some claim sin is nothing but a contrivance. You also need to notice that the purpose of material life is not to create a garden of Eden, as if God were trying to entertain himself and didn't know what he is doing, because fundamentalists claim to be restoring such a condition.

Spirit cannibalism restructures spiritual beings. It causes them to grow into destruction machines. Their attitudes, values, habits and assumptions build upon each other in layers, each more corrupt than before. Over time, they are like spirits growing out of a bottle. The Bible describes them as serpents with a head and tail. They are like a coiled serpent, because stimulus-response reactions cause instant changes in them, like a snake striking.

The characteristics of evil are evident in exorcism as describe by Malachi Martin in Hostage to the Devil. The demons consider themselves to be gods—all-powerfull and surprisingly all-knowing. They have a different concept of knowledge than usual. They assume that their pervasive perception is knowledge, while they have no judgment or understanding. Their purpose is to control, subdue and destroy the victims who they posses and the exorcists.

Satanic rituals show the attitudes of the spirit cannibals in a direct manner. In its most complete form, a satanic ritual consists of multiple rape, abuse and murder of a baby and using its fat to make candles. Dog urine and blood of animals are drank. What is being expressed is not only a hate for human values and morality but biological existence. Drinking dog urine says nothing about humans; it expresses a hate for biological existence. The reason is because the original spirit cannibals were unchallenged gods over the universe until biological life developed. They were robbed of their power through biological life. Their existence is now a covert war against all life—human, biological and spiritual.
