Vatican IIThe Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) Main Points:
1. The original purpose of the bishops was to correct the absurdity that only Catholics get saved and to modernize.
2. The concept of morality was replaced with the concept of "community." 3. Undefined change was required, and it left nothing as it previously was except the theology. 4. The consequence was an overthrow of Catholicism by its enemies who were followed by persons who didn't know what they were doing. The new (V-II) liturgy is called a resurrection liturgy to replace the old mass based on Christ's crucifixion. In other words, people don't need to know what sin is, as long as they know how to rise from the dead. I was in college when Vatican II occurred. There was a large amount of information in the general media describing what was occurring. The purpose was largely to correct relationships to Protestants and the rest of the world. But that's not how conservatives describe it now days. They say ecumenism was about all of the Bishops attending; and therefore nothing was supposed to have changed. With their analysis, there was no reason for V-II to have occurred. Vatican II occurred because the realities inside the church door were not mixing with the realities outside the church door. The single most serious problem was the claim that only Catholics get saved. It was too incredible for modern Catholics, and the theology of that point needed to be corrected. Secondly, the theology of Thomas Aquinas was archaic and not credible to modern minds. The focus on modernizing in V-II documents is code for shifting away from Thomism and toward scientific rationality. To conservatives, Vatican II undermined the essence of Catholicism. To liberals, it did not go far enough in making changes. The historical rituals of Catholicism were immediately abandoned after V-II. The changes in rituals and environment obscured the definitive truths which were so visible in the past and left an emptiness in their place. For example, the cross with Christ's body on it said that sin is the problem. Humans would murder God for doing good deeds and teaching morality. Overcoming the sin was the purpose of all of the rituals. As those rituals were abandoned, so was the subject of sin. Summary While Vatican II was occurring, it was being called an "ecumenical" council. Ecumenical was explained to mean that it would reach out to Protestants and attempt to harmonize differences. Several Protestant observers were invited and participated in a peripheral way. Two documents dealt with ecumenism as an explanation of the relationship between Catholicism and other religions. Instructions were issued by the council requiring that a dialog be established between Catholics and Protestants. A structure was set up for that dialog, and it continues. From these results, it is clear that the primary reason why V-II occurred was because the Catholic principle that only Catholics get saved was not credible and needed to be changed. Prior to V-II, kids were incredulous when told in catechism that their Protestant friends were not going to get saved. They didn't believe it; they just assumed that Catholic theology was really messed up. So the Bishops needed to reestablish their credibility, and V-II was an attempt to do so. Actually, Vatican II did not change the theological error, and ultra conservatives in Catholicism still promote the error (saying that non-Catholics do not get saved). But the primary purpose of V-II was to effectively correct that point. So it is now corrected by implication, while the theology is still corrupt in claiming only Catholics get saved. This situation allows conservatives to claim the theology is infallible, because it never changed, while it is extremely corrupt, because it still says no persons but Catholics get saved. However, this result was over-shadowed by an unexpected result. The Council also said that the people would be more involved in the primary ritual, which was being called the mass, but was then called the liturgy. They said some of the Latin should be changed to the local vernacular. These requirements were not explained further. Committees were to be established for implementing them. A hierarchy of committees were established from national to local levels. The unexpected result was that numerous persons interpreted the instructions to participate, and the emphasis on change, to mean that the laymen were to take control of the religion, and nothing was to remain as it previously was. That mentality instantly prevailed in some parishes, such as on college campuses, where the results were most dramatic. Altars were moved out from the wall, and the priest went to the other side facing the people. He spoke in English (vernacular) instead of Latin. Guitars were brought in to replace organs. People sang folk songs, while papers shuffling and chairs rattling was all else that was heard. Nowdays, the emphasis is on redesigning the buildings, so people sit in a circle, were they can see each other. They participate in every way possible reducing the visibility of the priest. The purpose is said to have changed from representing the crucifixion to representing the resurrection. Issues The focus of the V-II liturgy is to create a push button fix for sin. There is no path or moral teaching. Satan teaches society its standards on the street, while religion takes care of the consequences. Religion is thereby a facilitator for satan's work. Some slogans used during the liturgy are designed for push button religion. For example, "Dying he destroyed our death, rising he restored our life." Christ supposedly did it all on the cross (similar to atonement). What are the human responsibilities? Vulnerable persons are persecuted to death, because Christ took care of everything on the cross. Another slogan says "Speak but the word, and my soul will be healed." A quick fix replaces moral knowledge and responsibilities. Christ taught moral knowledge and a path for overcoming sin. Organized religion is not doing the same thing. Satan teaches society nihilism, and even supposed believers assume that nihilism is a correct standard. Christ taught otherwisethat knowledge is necessary for overcoming sin (Mat 13:12, 15:10)(Mark 4:13, 7:14, 8:21)(Luke 8:18, 24:45)(John 8:43). Nihilism is "see no evil, speak no evil, do no evil." It facilitates evil. It is also promoted as a sort-of positivism, where criticism is attacked as a corruption. About ninety percent of the time, the word positivism can be replaced with the word nihilism, and it shows how the world is taught how to promote corruption, even in religion. It demonstrates the obviousthat corrupt humans cannot design their own religion without using it to rationalize and promote sin rather than overcome it. The pre-Vatican-II ritual used symbols only and not even the English language. So the message was taught by Christ, not humans. The message was that God was crucified for doing good deeds, because humans have been corrupted by sin. Overview The assumption within traditional Catholicism was that the Church produced the "keys to heaven"meaning the seven sacraments. In reality, the seven sacraments had a small significance in doing what was claimed, meaning overcoming sin. They were to the spirit as the family doctor was to medicine. Assuming that the seven sacraments were everything was like assuming the family doctor was everything. It was like saying you don't need to go to school, and you don't need to get a job; all you need is a family doctor. Then came the modern society. The realities inside the church door were not mixing with the realities outside the church door. Guess which ones were winning. So at Vatican II, the bishops said in effect, "Maybe we need to go beyond the seven sacraments and add religion to the rest of life. We'll call it community. Community is developing gifts through social interactions." Christ taught what constructive behavior is. Community looks in that direction but says almost nothing about what one should see there.HOME |
