Science and Religion
Organized religions promote a subjective connection to God or a similar infinite state. Worship does this, as does meditation. Contemplative religions are also subjective and self-centered, attempting to improve morality and wisdom through thought. Fundamentalists assume the indwelling of the Holy Spirit perfects oneself in some mysterious way, while the state of grace is a similar, but more timid, experience in Catholicism.
All of these purposes for religion are a disconnect from objective reality. In fact, it goes so far as to put God's supposedly infallible words in conflict with objective evidence, as in creationism. There is only one place in religion where this subjectivity of purpose is not promoted as the central concern. It is Christ's teaching. Christ taught life as a proper relationship to the objective reality which exists outside of self. Christ said he is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He said his entire purpose in appearing was to testify to the truth (John 18:37). And he said truth would set people free (from sin) (John 8:32, 34). A technical definition of truth is the communicated representation of unified reality. (Unified reality is a philosophical definition of life which applies to both spiritual and material life.) In concept, truth is aligning the mind upon objective reality. This involves study to acquire knowledge (seeking and finding, as Christ commanded [Mat 7:8]), and honest representation of the results. This is exactly what science is. Science is defined by experimentation to test the nature of objective reality. Science is Christ's philosophy applied to life in a technological society. For this reason, science nearly replaced religion in teaching human standards based upon rationality. But before science completed the task, it slid into a mud hole of corruption, along with the rest of society, due to increased complexities and demands which caused power mongering to squash the purpose of science like an elephant sitting on a cornflake. Truth is the universal religion. All structured religions are disappearing. Fundamentalism is still increasing, but it is not a religion, it is an ideology driven by power mongering with no real concern for morality; and it is hastening the disappearance of structured religions. Eventually, the only religion that will remain is truth. Remember, Christ's only purpose in appearing was to testify to the truth, which means to create the universal religion. |
